What’s the Difference Between Moissanite & Lab Grown Diamonds?

Moissanite and Lab Grown Diamonds are both popular alternatives to natural diamonds, but they have key differences that are important to understand. Moissanite is a beautiful diamond alternative stone that holds most of the same qualities as a lab-grown diamond, making it a highly desired gemstone to set within fine jewelry and engagement rings.

Slate & Tell’s Lab-Grown Diamonds (also known as lab-created diamonds, man-made diamonds, engineered diamonds, and cultured diamonds) are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. The beauty, origin, and cost efficiency of a Lab Diamond are what makes them a top choice for today’s engagement rings and wedding bands, compared to Natural Diamond.

The Origin

One of the main differences between moissanite and lab-grown diamonds is their origin. Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral, silicon carbide, that is extremely rare and is typically only found in meteorites. It was first discovered by French scientist Henri Moissan in 1893, and it was named after him. Today Moissanite is mass created in a laboratory setting, making them an eco-friendly alternative to natural diamonds.

Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are also created in a laboratory setting using advanced technology that replicates the conditions in which natural diamonds form. This means that lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds, but they are produced in a more controlled and efficient manner.

Physical Appearance

An important difference between Moissanite and Lab-Grown Diamonds is their appearance. Moissanite has a refractive index of 2.65 – 2.69 which is higher than the refractive index of a natural diamond. This means that it refracts light differently and has a different sparkle. Some people may find the sparkle of moissanite to be too bright or rainbow-like, while others may prefer it to the more subdued sparkle of natural diamonds.

Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, have a refractive index of 2.42 which is the same as natural diamonds and therefore creates the same sparkle and brilliance. Depending on which appearance you prefer will determine whether you opt for a Moissanite or Lab Created Diamond.

Cost Efficient

In terms of cost, moissanite is generally less expensive than lab-grown diamonds. Moissanite is mass-produced, requiring less energy and resources to produce, making it more affordable. However, lab-grown diamonds are still less expensive than natural diamonds, and they are becoming increasingly popular due to their ethical and environmental benefits. With both stone options, you will save big making larger carat sizes more attainable for the customer.

Durability & Strength

When it comes to durability, both moissanite and lab-grown diamonds are very hard and resistant to scratching and chipping. However, moissanite is slightly softer than natural diamonds and may not be as durable in the long run. Lab-grown diamonds are just as durable as natural diamonds and are a great choice for everyday wear.

With many engagement ring styles to choose from at Slate & Tell, selecting your center stone is one of the most important factors. Moissanite and lab-grown diamonds are both excellent alternatives to natural diamonds, but they have some key differences to consider.

Moissanite is a lab created gemstone with similar components to a diamond and is less expensive. It has more brilliant, rainbow-like flashes of sparkle, but is less durable than lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds and are becoming increasingly popular due to their ethical and environmental benefits.
