LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

Produced in a controlled environment, lab-grown diamonds share identical chemical properties with natural diamonds. Because they share the same crystal structure, they have indistinguishable properties from a natural diamond. Lab-grown diamonds also have the same scratch resistance as a natural diamond as they both score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale.

Lab-grown diamonds cost less per carat than natural diamonds. The rarity of a natural diamond contributes to its higher price.

You may hear these diamonds referred to as lab-made, lab-grown, lab-created, synthetic, and cultured which can all describe diamonds made in a laboratory.

Since lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds, they are not regarded as fake. Throughout history, fake diamonds have been made of glass and carry no value. Plastic, glass, or white gemstones do not possess the properties of a diamond that create its infamous sparkle and scratch resistance.

The lab-diamond crystal is grown in a highly controlled environment. One method, called HPHT, begins with carbon placed under a high pressure, high temperature environment resulting in a diamond crystal. Another common method is called Chemical Vapor Deposition, CVD. This method begins with a seed crystal and develops the diamond using gas and heat to grow the crystal. Once a lab-grown diamond is complete, it still must be cut and polished.
